Back to School Parenting Points for Children with Special Needs

A new school year is beginning. Along with new teachers, new classes, maybe even a new school district!

In assisting to minimize Back-to-School anxiety, we’ve compiled a list of six supportive back-to-school tips.

Transitioning into a new school year can be extremely tough. Organization is key when navigating with special needs children.

1.Create a Visual Planning Schedule

Note all phone calls, e-mails, meetings, sporting events, and conferences on a visual board or calendar in a space you frequent daily (e.g. refrigerator, office desk, etc.)

2.Revisit your child’s current IEP

The IEP is the road map for your child’s school year, so it’s important that you are knowledgeable of its conditions. Be mindful of the IEP’s expiration date. IEPs are reviewed yearly. If you need assistance with reviewing and understanding your child’s IEP, please fill out an online help request or call our office.

3.Communicate with your educational community

It’s essential to communicate with your educational community early and often. If there are any concerns, changes, or questions, it's important to share them as soon as possible.

4.Outline before and after school routines

Discuss and make your child aware of the changes in their daily routines. Begin reenacting the new schedule that will occur when school starts. Begin implementing changes (i.e. bedtime, bus arrival and departure time) well in advance.

5.Stay “IN THE KNOW”

Try to stay well informed with up-to-date information, new education legislation, news, and events. Connect with your regional LACAN leader for legislation updates and FHFGBR newsletter for information and local events.

6.BE ACTIVE

Take advantage of Open House, Back-to-School nights, and parent-teacher conferences to assist in regulating your school schedule with accuracy. Get acclimated to the school, teachers, staff, therapist, students, and families. For more information about building community, partner with FHFGBR!
