WHY RECOGNIZE SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION?

October represents Substance Abuse Prevention Awareness Month, an observance that encourages prevention efforts among teens and young adults and to remember those who lost their lives to substance use and misuse.


According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), people are most likely to begin abusing drugs during adolescence. In 2019, NSDUH reported, of people ages 12 and older:


  • 164.5 MILLION AMERICANS USED ILLEGAL DRUGS IN THE PAST MONTH
  • 16 MILLION ARE HEAVY ALCOHOL USERS
  • 20.4 MILLION WERE DIAGNOSED WITH A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER
  • 9.7 MILLION MISUSED PAIN RELIEVERS


THE LOUISIANA OPIOID DATA AND SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM REPORTS 1,485 DRUG RELATED-DEATHS IN 2019.
